Ethical Behavior in Digital Communication
Privacy Statement
April
30, 2017
I am honored, now that I have finally decided
that from now on I am going to be even more careful while handling information
that belongs to myself, my family and my friends. I believe in the importance
of personal information, and by personal information I mean; any information
that may be used to identify myself, my family and my friends, such as full
names and addresses. I am aware that there’s a danger in being careless with
personal information, and on this basis, I solemnly promise to refrain from
posting information online that may contain obscenities either as images or as
words, that may in anyway misrepresent myself, my family and my friends. I am
aware that there are cyber criminals and sneaky weirdo strangers out there who
are ready to seize on any opportunity I may unknowingly let out. Having said
that, my first action would be to give more attention to ethical behavior
online.
On this last day of April, I am going to
create my own "Personal Information Filter." I will create a shortlist of
person-specific questions that relate to my online safety, and then use them to ask
myself each time I have to post something online. Now, what this means is that,
for example, if I answer a single “No” to any one of my questions, that means
that I am not going to post it, and that is going to be the work of this filter.
I will also take special
measure to protect my offline information, like making sure to keep personal
belongings such as bank statements, mails with my address, away from public
areas. Meanwhile however, I know also, that there's another worse form of
personal information sharing that is much more popular, and many times damaging, and you can hardly find
anyone who hasn't done it. This type of information sharing is done both off and
online, and it is worse than all the others. It’s Gossip!
Here would be a sample of What is Safe to Share:
1. I may share my favorite
movie, but not my favorite theatre
2. I may share my pet's name,
but not which park I take her for walk
3. I can share that I like to
jog, but not what track I use.
4. Which book but not what
library
5. Share my view, but not if
it's going to bring harm to someone
