A Hero At Lane Community College
First, let me begin by saying that I am in no way any expert about what a great Helper is or should be, because I myself, _ there have been times when I painfully turned my eyes away from the suffering of others only because I wasn't sure whether it was necessary to help. But every day, I learn something new about myself, and often it's from the people that I meet. Another thing that has become law to me over the years is that life will humble you at one point or another. It humbles all of us. This being said, I can now introduce the Helper of the month.
Mr. Heath Pierce
has been selected as Helper for the month of December, for his supreme sense of
humility, principles and helpfulness, here at the Lane Community College. The decision
was reached by the team after a careful consideration of the deeds and actions of
the man. I and my partners have no doubt that Mr. Heath has reached our
standard to take the Helper of The Month Title. When I first met this
genuine man who works as a department manager at the Lane Community College in
Eugene, the one thing that struck me the most about our meeting was his
humility. What happened after our meeting that day is one I continue to tell smiling.
When this young
man moved here in the city, it is just like now, the cold Winter was beginning
to bite hard on people. At the college where he's now both a student and a
non-classified employee, he was able to meet some kind people immediately,
and one of those people advised him to go and see a department head at the
college. After this first meeting, about five months later, the man was called
in, where he says he found himself seated before a whole panel, of men who are masters in the field that he was going to be tested. Among those men, was also
the same man he had met earlier. But because he is so humble, the young man had
trouble identifying him as the boss in the room.
More than three
months after the interview, the man was finally offered a job. Few months
later, he moved into a bigger space, and then got himself a car. All of this happened
because there was a Helper who came to his aid when it was most needed. The helper was Mr. Heath.
Because it's a
Union job, those who work part-time are only allowed to work for a certain number
of hours, and when a worker reaches this limit before the year ends, he would
have to stop working until a new work-calendar begins. However, to get around
this unusual problem, the worker would have to work twenty hours a week, this way he or she can continue working throughout the year nonstop.
The young man came
from a position of hardship, so it was only reasonable that he chose to work 40
hours a week and this made him wrapped up a lot of hours fast. It's left only a
month before he is told to stop. Last week he met with another adviser outside
of work. According to him, the meeting had nothing to do with work but to
consider transfer options. Another saintly lady told him to go and see the boss,
which he did. This boss was no one other than Mr. Heath again. Now, the young man is guaranteed to stay working till has vacation. And these are just a few of the many
helps Mr. Heath continues to give people here at the Lane Community College.
Great Article Sam, Mr.Heath sounds like a good man. I would have taken the full hours also. LCC has a lot of good quality people. That is what makes LCC such a great place to learn and be apart of. :)
ReplyDeleteSamuel, you provide a very empathetic and thoughtful account of Mr. Heath. This is such a wonderful article. Thank you.
